Jo & Jo- Malayalam Film Review
The recent movie releases in Malayalam film industry have been praised pan India for realistic depictions. The film ‘Jo and Jo’ directed by debutante Arun D. Jose also earns the title for it makes us viewers strike a chord with the settings & characters. The director along with script writer Raveesh Nath surprises us with dialogues carefully thought from the perspective of the current generation. The teaser promises a laugh riot and the film does justice to it entirely. While actors Mathew Thomas and Naslen Gafoor have already proven their flair, we see Nikhila Vimal carving a niche for herself like never before.
As the movie title goes, the story set in COVID times is about the love-hate relationship between the siblings Jomol(Nikhila) & Jomon (Mathew). Johny Antony plays their father Baby(a name typical to Syrian Christians in Kerala) to perfection with his humorous dialogue delivery and control of emotions. Sminu Sijo as Lillikutty Baby does more than justice to her role for she never gives the hint of ‘acting’. Annamma who supports her grandchildren completes the middle class family’s picture. The entire plot revolves around a love letter addressed to ‘Jo’ which prompts Jomon and Jomol to find its owner while they doubt each other. Besties Manoj Sundaran (Naslen Gafoor) and Eby Kuruvilla (MelvinBabu) have Jomon’s back in his expeditions.
Apart from comical scenes related to lockdown & teenage adventures, the film has moments that condemn certain societal practices.Jomol questions her mother as to why she never admonishes her brother while coaching her to be a ‘good wife’. She poses a rhetorical question- shouldn’t there be good husbands too? Her comments are reminders to parents who raise their kids in lieu with stereotypical gender roles. The film also hints at the instability of virtual world and social media influencers through the characters Captain Marvel (you know who) and Tuttu the ‘Parishkkari’ respectively.
Should you watch the film? Definitely yes. The actors have given it their all. This light hearted movie is surely an entertainer.
